Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Iceland

  • Nova 5G
  • Síminn 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Iceland is not in the European Union but it is in the European Economic Area, so EU roaming covers it: on an EU plan your data works with no surcharge. This eSIM is for visitors from further afield. There are two networks, Nova and Siminn, both on 5G. The ring road and the towns are covered; much of the interior is not.

Before you buy

A stopover in Iceland, then on to Europe

Icelandair lets passengers flying between North America and Europe break the journey in Iceland for a few days. If that is your plan, think about the whole trip before you choose. When Iceland is all of it, the packs above are enough. When you carry on to London, Paris or Copenhagen, the Europe pack covers Iceland and 32 other countries on the same eSIM, so nothing changes when you land on the continent.

Count the days from Keflavík, not from the second flight. Every pack starts on its first connection, so a Europe pack switched on in Iceland is already running when you reach the mainland. A three-day stopover followed by two weeks in Europe does not fit in the 15-day pack: take one of the 30-day sizes.

Golden Circle weekend, Ring Road week or a month online

Three or four days in Reykjavík, with the Golden Circle and a run along the south coast, fit in the 3 GB pack, which lasts 15 days. A full lap of the Ring Road in eight to ten days, with maps, weather checks and photos sent from the road, is a 5 GB trip, and that pack runs for 30 days.

Add the Westfjords or the Snæfellsnes peninsula, which sit off Route 1 and mean more hours behind the wheel, and 10 GB is the calmer choice, above all if the phone also feeds a tablet in the car. The 20 GB pack is for a month in the country or for working online between guesthouses. The data calculator gives an estimate for your own trip.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Iceland. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Iceland, answered

When do I install it if I land at Keflavík?

At home, on wifi, any day before you fly: the QR arrives by email and the plan does not start until the eSIM connects in Iceland. When the plane lands, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and you are online before you leave the terminal.

Does the eSIM give me an Icelandic phone number?

No. It is data only, with no number, calls or SMS. Calls to guesthouses and tour operators go through your usual SIM, while messaging apps keep working over the eSIM data.

Will I have coverage in the interior and on the F-roads?

Across much of the interior, no. The Icelandic highlands are almost uninhabited and there are very few masts: the same is true of any Icelandic SIM. If you are heading into the highlands, download your maps and do not count on having data.

How many GB for a lap of the island?

It depends how much you lean on maps and photos. With normal use, around 300 MB a day: for a week, the 3 GB pack is enough. For two weeks, or if you upload a lot of photos, take the 10 GB one.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
