Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

What 4G and 5G change in practice

For maps, messaging, email and social media the difference is small — 4G handles all of it comfortably. 5G shows up on large downloads and when uploading video. If a network here is listed as 4G, nothing you normally do while travelling will feel slower.

So how many GB for a week?

At 300 MB a day a week comes to about 2 GB, which is why the 3 GB pack covers most short trips. Add video most evenings and you are closer to 8 GB for the same week. If you are unsure, the calculator asks five questions and works it out.

Iceland is not in the European Union but it is in the European Economic Area, so EU roaming covers it: on an EU plan your data works with no surcharge. This eSIM is for visitors from further afield. There are two networks, Nova and Siminn, both on 5G. The ring road and the towns are covered; much of the interior is not.

Do I pay roaming in Iceland coming from the EU?

No. Iceland is in the European Economic Area and falls under EU roaming, so your plan works as it does at home even though Iceland is not in the European Union.

Which networks do I connect to in Iceland?

Nova and Siminn, both on 5G. Your phone picks whichever has the better signal and switches on its own.

Will I have coverage in the interior and on the F-roads?

Across much of the interior, no. The Icelandic highlands are almost uninhabited and there are very few masts: the same is true of any Icelandic SIM. If you are heading into the highlands, download your maps and do not count on having data.

How many GB for a lap of the island?

It depends how much you lean on maps and photos. With normal use, around 300 MB a day: for a week, the 3 GB pack is enough. For two weeks, or if you upload a lot of photos, take the 10 GB one.
