Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

City guides in Hungary

Each one has its own guide: from the airport to the centre, where the signal drops and how much data you need.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Hungary

  • Telenor Hungary 5G
  • Vodafone 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Hungary is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are two networks here, Telenor Hungary and Vodafone, both on 5G. In Budapest you have plenty; it is around the Danube bend and out on the eastern plain that a second network earns its keep.

Before you buy

Danube cruises and the three-capital trip

Many Danube river cruises start or finish in Budapest and stop in Bratislava, Vienna and German towns such as Passau on the way. That is up to four countries in one week, all of them among the 33 in the Europe pack, while the Hungary pack works only in Hungary.

On a cruise, take the Europe pack and size it to how you use the phone ashore: 3 GB for 15 days if you will lean on the ship's wifi, 10 GB for 30 days if you want maps in every port and photos sent home each evening. The same applies to the land version of the trip, Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna by train in a week. Install the eSIM at home before you go; it starts counting at its first connection in any of the covered countries.

Budapest, Eger, Balaton: trips that stay in Hungary

If the whole trip is inside Hungary, the country pack is the one to buy, and the size follows the shape of the trip. A few days in Budapest, between the baths, the river and the tram map, fit in 3 GB for 15 days. Add a day in Eger or Pécs and a few nights at Lake Balaton and you are at 5 GB for 30 days. Ten or 20 GB are for a long summer at the lake, or a month working from a laptop in Budapest.

It is aimed at people whose own plan charges for Hungary: travellers from the US, Canada, Australia or Asia, and UK plans that add a daily fee in Europe. Visitors from the EU are usually covered by their own tariff already.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Hungary. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Hungary, answered

Does it work if I cross into Serbia from Szeged?

No. The pack only works in Hungary, and Serbia is not one of the Europe pack's 33 countries either. A day in Subotica or Novi Sad needs its own Serbia eSIM.

Is one pack enough for a family at Lake Balaton?

Yes, if one phone shares its data with the others through the hotspot, which the pack allows. Size it for everyone: for a family over a week or two, 10 or 20 GB rather than 5 GB, on Telenor Hungary or Vodafone.

Does it work on the Budapest metro?

You get the same as a Hungarian SIM, because it is the same physical network. In the metro tunnels it depends on whether there is a mast inside, and no eSIM changes that.

I am visiting Budapest and also Vienna or Bratislava. Does this pack work?

No, this one covers Hungary only. The 33-country Europe pack includes Austria and Slovakia, which is the usual trio for that trip.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
