Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

City guides in Austria

Each one has its own guide: from the airport to the centre, where the signal drops and how much data you need.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Austria

  • 3 5G
  • A1.net 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Austria is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are two networks here, 3 and A1.net, both on 5G, and your phone moves to whichever has the better signal. In the alpine valleys that matters: it is common for one to reach where the other does not.

Before you buy

Ski weeks, and the slopes that reach Switzerland

A week of skiing in Austria is usually a 5 GB trip: lift and piste apps, the weather, messages and photos over seven days, on a pack that lasts 30. A group sharing one phone's hotspot, or a fortnight on the snow, is better on 10 GB.

Before you buy, check where the lifts go. Ischgl shares its ski area, the Silvretta Arena, with Samnaun in Switzerland, and you can ski from one country into the other and back in a day. The Austria pack does not cover Switzerland, so on the Samnaun side the eSIM has no network to use. The Europe pack includes Switzerland, and for a cross-border area like this it is the sensible choice. In resorts that stay inside Austria, which is most of Tyrol and the Salzburg region, the Austria pack is enough.

Vienna for a few days, or the country by rail

A city break in Vienna, with palace and museum tickets on the phone and the transport map open all day, fits in 3 GB for 15 days. Ten days to two weeks by train, Vienna to Salzburg and on to Innsbruck with a detour to Hallstatt, is a 10 GB trip if you plan each leg on board and post photos as you go. Twenty GB is for a month, or for running a laptop.

The rail lines do not stop at the border, though. From Innsbruck the line climbs over the Brenner into Italy, and from Vienna trains carry on to Budapest, Bratislava and Prague. If any of those are on your route, buy the Europe pack once instead of a second country pack. The Vienna guide covers the city itself.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Austria. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Austria, answered

Does it cover a day trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden?

No. Berchtesgaden is in Germany, just over the border, and the Austria pack only works in Austria. If that day trip is in your plan, the Europe pack covers both countries.

I am working a winter season in Austria. Does a 30-day pack work for that?

Yes, a month at a time. The 20 GB pack lasts 30 days on 3 and A1.net, and when it runs out you top up the same eSIM instead of installing a new one. It is data only, so for an Austrian phone number you would still need a local SIM.

Will I have coverage in the mountains?

Wherever 3 or A1.net reach, yes, the same as with an Austrian SIM. In closed valleys and at altitude there are gaps, and no eSIM fixes that because it depends on the mast. Having two networks helps: if one does not reach, your phone tries the other.

I am visiting Austria and also Germany or Italy. Does this pack work?

No, this one covers Austria only. The 33-country Europe pack includes all three and there is nothing to change when you cross a border.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
