Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in Vietnam

  • Viettel Mobile 5G
  • Vinaphone 5G
  • MobiFone 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Vietnam is long and thin, and most visitors travel the length of it: Hanoi and the north, Hoi An in the middle, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta in the south. In every city you will order a Grab car or motorbike, check bus and train times and message guesthouses as you go. This eSIM connects to Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone, all on 5G, and switches between them on its own. It is data only, so it gives you no Vietnamese number.

Before you buy

North to south: picking the pack

A week in one region, say Hanoi with a night on Ha Long Bay, or Ho Chi Minh City with a day in the Mekong Delta, fits the 3 GB pack, which lasts 15 days. Two weeks from Hanoi down to Hoi An is a 5 GB trip, valid for 30 days.

The full run in three weeks, with the night train from Hanoi to Lao Cai for Sapa, a flight to Da Nang for Hoi An and then Ho Chi Minh City, means maps and ride apps every day: take 10 GB. If you settle in Da Nang or Hoi An for a month to work, or share the hotspot with a laptop, 20 GB is the one. Hoi An has no airport of its own, so you land at Da Nang and do the rest of the way by road. Carrying on overland? The packs stop at the border, so look at the Cambodia or Laos eSIM. The data calculator fits it to your route.

Landing, getting around and the far north

Long-haul flights arrive at Noi Bai in Hanoi or Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang is the airport for the centre of the country. Install the eSIM at home with the QR code from the email, then turn on its line and data roaming once you land; the 15 or 30 days start from that first connection. With data working, you can order a Grab from the arrivals hall instead of looking for a taxi outside.

In the mountains of the far north, around Sapa or on a motorbike loop through Ha Giang, roads are long and villages far apart. Download offline maps and save your guesthouse details before you set off each morning. If you run short halfway through, top up the same eSIM without reinstalling, wherever you are. Questions

Travelling to Vietnam, answered

Can I book a Grab motorbike from the airport?

Yes. Grab works in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang and only needs data, so it runs on the eSIM as soon as you land. Your Grab account keeps the number you signed up with, because the eSIM has none.

Which networks does it use in Vietnam?

Viettel Mobile, Vinaphone and MobiFone, all with 5G. Your phone picks whichever has the best signal and changes on its own as you travel.

Which pack for three weeks from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City?

The 10 GB pack, which runs for 30 days. Three weeks of ride apps, maps, transport bookings and photos usually go past 5 GB.

Does it work on Phu Quoc?

Yes. Phu Quoc is a Vietnamese island with its own airport, so the same eSIM and pack keep working when you fly there from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
