Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

Coverage

The networks you connect to in Romania

  • Vodafone 4G
  • Orange 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Romania is in the European Union, so if you are travelling from another European country your own plan already covers data. This eSIM is for visitors arriving from outside the EU. There are two networks and they are not equivalent: Orange carries 5G and Vodafone appears as 4G. Your phone uses whichever has the better signal, so in some areas you will be on 4G even if your handset can do more.

Before you buy

Bucharest, the Transylvania loop and a month in Cluj

Most first trips pair Bucharest with a drive or train ride north into Transylvania: Brașov and Bran, Sighișoara, Sibiu, and in summer the Transfăgărășan. For a week like that, the 5 GB for 30 days handles navigation, train times and photos; the 3 GB for 15 days is enough if you stay a few days in Bucharest or join a guided tour. Two weeks that also take in Maramureș or the painted monasteries of Bucovina call for 10 GB, mostly because of maps and music in the car.

Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest also draw remote workers for a month or longer. The 20 GB for 30 days covers a laptop on the phone's hotspot, which every pack includes, for email, calls and browsing. When the 30 days end, you buy a new pack; the eSIM has no number to keep, only data.

Romania and Moldova: two packs on one phone

A common add-on to a Romanian trip is Moldova: the bus or train from Iași to Chișinău, the wine cellars at Cricova or Mileștii Mici, the cave monastery at Orheiul Vechi. Neither this pack nor the 33-country Europe pack reaches across the Prut, so for that part you need the Moldova pack as well. Buy both before you travel and install them at home; a phone keeps several eSIMs, and at the border you just move the data line from one to the other. The Romania pack's days keep running while you are away, so if Moldova sits in the middle of the trip, the 30-day sizes leave margin.

Visitors on an EU plan have it easier: their own plan now works in Moldova at home prices, as the Romania guide explains. The two-pack setup is for travellers from further away.

Crossing borders?

One pack, 33 countries

The packs above only work in Romania. For about 2 € more these work across all of Europe — same eSIM, nothing to change at the border.

3 GB Europe · 33 countries · 15 days 6,90 € 2,30 €/GB
Recommended 10 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 15,90 € 1,59 €/GB
20 GB Europe · 33 countries · 30 days 23,90 € 1,20 €/GB
Questions

Travelling to Romania, answered

I land at Bucharest Otopeni late at night. Is there anything to do at the airport?

No shop and no queue. If you installed the eSIM at home, set it as your data line after landing and turn on data roaming for it; the days start with that first connection in Romania.

My phone supports 5G. Why does it sometimes show 4G in Romania?

Of the two networks this pack uses, only Orange carries 5G; Vodafone appears as 4G. Your phone joins whichever has the better signal where you are and moves between them on its own.

Does it work in the Carpathians and Transylvania?

In towns and on main roads, yes, the same coverage a Romanian SIM gets. In mountain areas and closed valleys there are gaps, and that depends on where the masts are, not on the card.

I am visiting Romania and also Bulgaria or Hungary. Does this work?

No, this one covers Romania only. The 33-country Europe pack includes all three.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
