Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in United States

  • Verizon 5G
  • AT&T 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

If your plan from home bills the United States as roaming, a few days of maps, ride-hailing and messages get expensive quickly. This eSIM puts you on Verizon and AT&T, both on 5G, from the moment you land, and it is data only: your usual number stays on the phone for calls and texts. Cities are easy. The big western national parks are not: across much of their land there is little or no signal on any network.

Before you buy

City break, road trip or a month away

A week in New York, with the subway, museums and a train down to Washington, fits in the 3 GB pack, which runs for 15 days. Most of that data goes on maps, transit apps and messaging, and hotel wifi covers the evenings.

Two weeks on the West Coast by car, from Los Angeles to San Francisco with stops in Las Vegas and the national parks, is a 5 GB or 10 GB trip: navigation runs all day and photos go up from the road. Both last 30 days. The 20 GB pack suits a month across several states or working remotely between motels. If the phone also shares its connection with a laptop or a second phone, go one size up. The data calculator works it out for your own route.

Landing, the subway and the parks

Install the eSIM at home on wifi: the QR comes by email and the plan does not start until it connects in the United States. Whether you land at JFK, Newark, LAX or Miami, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once the plane is on the ground, and you can book a ride or check the train into town from the terminal.

In New York, the underground subway stations have mobile signal; the tunnels between them are still being covered. In Yellowstone and Death Valley the National Park Service warns that service is limited or absent, so save your maps before you enter. The packs only work in the United States: for Canada or Mexico you need that country's eSIM.

Questions

Travelling to United States, answered

Will I have signal in Yellowstone or Death Valley?

Only in places. The National Park Service describes cell service in Yellowstone as limited and in Death Valley as limited to none, whatever SIM you use. Download offline maps and trail details before you drive in.

Does it work on the New York subway?

In the underground stations, yes: they have mobile signal. In the tunnels between stations the signal can still drop, because that coverage is still being extended.

Will my bank's text codes still reach me in the US?

Yes, on your usual line. The eSIM has no number, so texts keep arriving on your home SIM as on any trip abroad; leave data roaming off on that line so all your data goes through the eSIM.

Can I use it on a side trip to Canada or Mexico?

No. The packs only work in the United States, so for Toronto, Vancouver or Cancún you need a separate eSIM for that country.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
