Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in South Korea

  • SKTelecom 5G
  • LG Uplus 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

South Korea runs on apps: the local map apps for walking and the subway, ride-hailing, café orders, translation from a camera. All of that needs data from the moment you leave Incheon. This eSIM connects to SK Telecom and LG Uplus, both on 5G, and starts on its first connection in the country. One thing to know before you buy: it is data only, so it gives you no Korean number for apps that verify you by SMS.

Before you buy

Seoul, Busan and Jeju: sizing the pack

A week in Seoul, moving between neighbourhoods by subway with a map app open most of the day, fits the 3 GB pack, which lasts 15 days. Add Busan, which the KTX reaches from Seoul in under three hours, and a few days on Jeju, and you are looking at ten to fourteen days with more photos and more map use: that is a 5 GB trip, and the pack runs for 30 days.

Choose 10 GB if you stream on the train, make video calls home every evening or share data with someone travelling with you. Jeju is a short domestic flight from Gimpo, on one of the busiest air routes in the world, and the same eSIM keeps working there. The 20 GB pack is for a month in Korea or remote work over the hotspot. The data calculator estimates it for your own plan.

From Incheon to the city

Most international flights land at Incheon, west of Seoul, and the AREX airport railway takes you from there to Seoul Station. Gimpo, closer to the city, handles mostly domestic flights, including the ones to Jeju. The ride into Seoul is where you first want data: to check your route, message your accommodation and open your map app.

So install the eSIM at home over wifi, using the QR code from the email, and leave the line off until you land. Once you are on the ground, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming; the plan counts from that first connection, so the days you spend waiting for the trip do not count. If you run low, top up the same eSIM without reinstalling. If you are flying on to Tokyo, this pack covers South Korea only, so add the Japan eSIM for that leg.

Questions

Travelling to South Korea, answered

Will apps that ask for a Korean phone number work with this eSIM?

Not for that step. The eSIM has no number and receives no SMS, so any app that insists on a Korean number to verify you will not get one from it. Everything that only needs an internet connection works as normal.

Which networks does it use in South Korea?

SK Telecom and LG Uplus, both with 5G. Your phone picks the one with the best signal where you are and switches between them on its own.

Does it work on Jeju too?

Yes. Jeju is part of South Korea, so the same eSIM and the same pack keep working when you fly there from Seoul; there is nothing to change.

Should I use Google Maps in Korea?

Most visitors navigate with Naver Map or KakaoMap, the local map apps, for walking routes and the subway. Download one before you fly; it runs on the eSIM data like any other app.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
