Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in Japan

  • NTT docomo 5G
  • Rakuten Mobile 5G
  • KDDI/au 5G
  • SoftBank 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

In Japan your phone does a lot of the travelling for you: train connections, platform changes, station exits and restaurant queues all live on it. This eSIM gives you data on NTT docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile, and the phone moves between them on its own. You install it at home and it starts when it first connects in Japan. It is data only, so it does not give you a Japanese phone number.

Before you buy

Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka: which pack

The classic first trip is Tokyo, then the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto, then Osaka next door, with a day trip to Nara or Hiroshima. Ten days of that, leaning on maps for every train change and sending photos in the evenings, sits comfortably in the 5 GB pack, which runs for 30 days.

The 3 GB pack lasts 15 days and suits a short stay in one city, or a trip where you are back at the hotel wifi every evening. If you watch video on the long train rides, share data with a travel companion, or stay two weeks or more, 10 GB is the calmer choice. The 20 GB pack is for a month in Japan or for working from a laptop through the hotspot. The data calculator works out a number for your own itinerary.

Landing in Tokyo or Osaka

Most visitors arrive at Narita or Haneda for Tokyo, or at Kansai for Osaka and Kyoto. Kyoto has no airport of its own, so a Kyoto trip usually starts at Kansai or with the Shinkansen from Tokyo. Wherever you land, the first thing you need data for is the train into the city, and that is the moment you want the eSIM already working.

So install it at home: scan the QR from the email, leave the line switched off and fly. On landing, turn on the eSIM line and its data roaming, and the 15 or 30 days start from that first connection. If you run low, you top up the same eSIM without reinstalling anything. If Seoul is part of the same trip, this pack only works in Japan, so you need the South Korea eSIM as well.

Questions

Travelling to Japan, answered

I land at Narita, Haneda or Kansai. When do I install the eSIM?

Before you fly, at home and on wifi: the QR code arrives by email and the plan does not start until the eSIM connects in Japan. When the plane lands, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line and you are online before you leave the terminal.

Which networks will I use in Japan?

NTT docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile, all with 5G. Your phone picks the one with the best signal where you are and switches by itself.

Can I book a restaurant or a ryokan by phone with it?

Not with this eSIM: it has no number, calls or SMS. Phone calls go through your usual SIM, while WhatsApp, iMessage and booking apps keep working over the eSIM data.

I am travelling with someone whose phone has no eSIM. Can we share?

Yes. Hotspot is included, so your phone can share its data with a second phone, a tablet or a laptop. If you share all day, pick a bigger pack, because both devices draw from the same GB.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
