Will it work on my phone?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About, and scroll to EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Every iPhone from the XS (2018) onwards does.

On Android: Settings → About phone → Status, and look for EID. If there is an EID, your phone takes eSIMs. Most Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and later do.

It also has to be carrier-unlocked. If you bought it outright or your contract is over, it almost certainly is.

The networks you connect to in Hong Kong

  • csl 5G
  • SmarTone 5G

Your phone picks whichever of these has the best signal where you are, and switches on its own. Nothing to configure.

Work out my data

Hong Kong is compact and dense, and you cross it on the MTR, the Star Ferry and the trams, with directions, bus arrival times and menus to translate all on your phone. This eSIM connects to csl and SmarTone, both on 5G, and moves between them on its own. It is data only and it covers Hong Kong alone: Macau and mainland China, Shenzhen included, each need their own eSIM. Install it at home; it starts when it first connects in Hong Kong.

Before you buy

A stopover or a full week

Many people see Hong Kong on a stopover of two or three days between Europe and the rest of Asia or Australia: the Peak, Tsim Sha Tsui, a night market and a crossing on the Star Ferry. That fits easily in the 3 GB pack, valid for 15 days. A full week, with a day on Lantau for the Big Buddha and a hike on one of the trails, sits well in 5 GB, which lasts 30 days.

Take 10 GB if you work from cafés through the hotspot or share data with someone whose phone has no eSIM. The 20 GB pack is for a month in the city. Top-ups go onto the same eSIM, with no new QR code. The data calculator gives you a figure for your own plans.

Trails, islands and the border

Install the eSIM before you fly and switch on data roaming for the eSIM line when you land at Hong Kong International Airport, off Lantau; the plan starts on that first connection. In the city, coverage is not something you have to plan around.

In the hills it can be. The Hong Kong government acknowledges that parts of the country parks still lack mobile coverage, and has named the East Dam area in Sai Kung as a place where visitors report weak signal, so download the trail map before you set off. Near the northern boundary your phone can also pick up a mainland network, as the telecoms regulator has warned; this pack does not work on those, so select csl or SmarTone manually if data drops. For the next leg, add the Macau eSIM or the China eSIM.

Questions

Travelling to Hong Kong, answered

Does the eSIM give me a Hong Kong phone number?

No. It is data only, with no number, calls or SMS. WhatsApp and iMessage keep working with your usual number over the eSIM data.

Will it work in Macau on a day trip?

No. Macau has its own networks and this pack only works in Hong Kong, so for the ferry or the bridge to Macau add the Macau eSIM. The same goes for Shenzhen or anywhere else in mainland China.

Does it work underground on the MTR?

Yes. The Hong Kong government says 5G covers the stations of every MTR line, so you keep data on the platforms.

Which pack for a three-day stopover?

The 3 GB pack, which lasts 15 days, is plenty for a few days of maps, messaging and photos. If you share the connection with a laptop, take 5 GB.

Who is behind this

A person, not a call centre

Snoozim is run from Barcelona by Ibai Guirado Vera. It exists because paying for roaming by the day on a short trip made no sense. If something goes wrong with your eSIM you write, and the same person who built this answers you, within 24 hours.
