Mobile internet in Dublin: a visitor’s guide
Dublin is small enough to walk and well covered by 4G and 5G. What catches visitors out is the border: Ireland is in the EU, Northern Ireland is not, and a day trip north changes what your phone costs.

From the airport to the centre
You get into town from Dublin airport by road, most people by bus, and that is a phone job: which service, where it stops, and how long it takes at that hour. What you wrote down at home is out of date by the time you land, so you want data before you leave the terminal.
Airport Wi-Fi usually wants a registration form and tends to cut out after a while. Install the eSIM at home over your own Wi-Fi: it does not start counting until the phone connects in Ireland. Buses and trams are paid with a card or the phone, so keep some battery for that too.
Crossing to Belfast: where the EU rule stops
Ireland is in the EU. Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom are not, since Brexit, and the border has no checkpoint to remind you. An Ireland plan simply stops giving you data once you cross, and a home plan starts charging whatever its UK tariff says.
Within a few kilometres of the border, on either side, the phone can also attach to a network from the other jurisdiction while you are still where you started, so pick the network by hand there. Roaming in the UK after Brexit explains the British side; if the trip crosses, the simple answer is a plan that lists both.
Coverage: a walkable centre and the day trips
- Download offline maps and your times for the way back before you leave the city.
- Live transport and ride-hailing apps do not work without a connection.
- Tour and attraction tickets are shown from the phone: save them offline the night before.
- Photo and video uploads are what actually empty a small plan; leave them for the Wi-Fi.
The centre is compact and you will cover most of it on foot, with good coverage along the way. Indoors, thick stone walls, museums and basement rooms still knock the signal down. The trips people make out of Dublin are where it really matters: on the cliffs, the coast and the hills, coverage follows the towns and the main roads, and between them it thins out or goes altogether, on every network.

It depends on the days, on whether you watch video and on whether you share with a laptop. How much data do I need turns that into a number from what you actually do.
